Minden, Louisiana, February 26, 2015 In part due to an improving economy, enrollment in America’s two-year colleges has declined about 2 or 3percent annually in recent years. Northwest Louisiana Technical College, on the other hand, continues to buck this trend and has seen four consecutive semesters of significant enrollment growth.

The spring 2015 semester marks the fourth consecutive enrollment period of record enrollment at Northwest LTC. With 3,241 students enrolled, the college grew by 19 percent over the number enrolled in the previous spring semester (2,715). Dr. Rick Bateman, Jr., Interim Director of Northwest LTC, cites the demand for skilled workers, innovative programs designed to attract adult learners, and a strong outreach effort to high schools throughout the region as the principal factors contributing to record enrollment.

We continue to expand career pathways to adults engaged in preparation for the high school equivalency test (HiSET) so that they are prepared for in-demand careers in our regional economy that pay family-sustaining wages,” said Bateman. Laurie Morrow, Northwest LTC’s Chief Academic Officer, added, “Providing high quality career and technical education in and for our high schools is a high priority for us and we take pride in accelerating young people toward great paying jobs that will keep them in Louisiana.”

To accommodate the growth, Northwest LTC is increasing evening programs and working with its accreditor to obtain permission to offer classes online. The College will break ground on a new Workforce Development Center in the next few months.

Founded in 1936, Northwest Louisiana Technical College is a member of the Louisiana Community and Technical College System. The main campus is located in Minden and other campuses operate in Mansfield, Many, Natchitoches, and Shreveport. NWLTC was recently recognized by the Aspen Institute as one of the nation’s top two-year colleges.
